4 Week Workshop, Thursday Evenings, June 17- July 8, 4-7 pm, EST
Materials provided and shipped to you (pre-gessoed panel, pigments, casein powder, tracing and transfer paper; not provided: brushes, palette, ammonia for making casein glue, and eggs)
Tempera painting is one of the oldest painting techniques, and has long been admired for the clarity of line and color that the medium affords. First used by the Egyptians, perfected in the early Italian Renaissance, and brought back to life by icon painters and Andrew Wyeth, this luminous medium, long supplanted by oil paints, deserves a second look.
Join me in this four week workshop to learn the techniques and processes of two forms of tempera painting— egg tempera, which uses an egg yolk to form the paint binder, and casein tempera, which uses a glue made from casein, a milk protein. In addition to demoing step-by-step copying of a Botticelli portrait, this workshop will also include:
So, why learn tempera painting? Because of the linear approach egg tempera affords, it is the perfect paint for the linearly oriented, whereas casein tempera, though also quick-drying, allows for more painterly approach. Both painting types are incredible additions to your painting arsenal, and because of their quick-drying natures, they can also be used as an under layer for an oil painting, as well as added accents in a pen and ink drawing. Additionally, learning tempera enhances your knowledge of historical art techniques, and the craftsmanship they require.
This class is for all levels. If you cannot attend the live session, you may also purchase the recording, which will come with the materials shipped to you, and a scheduled, 30-minute private online critique.
