What is beauty? What are the abstract qualities in a painting that make it more than pigments on a canvas? Does skill matter? Who were the artists that painted, sculpted, and created the imagery of our Western imaginations-- and what can they still teach us?
Learn how to understand and think about art from a painter's perspective, as we dive into these questions and more in this four-week seminar. Part art history, part aesthetics, and part art theory, this seminar will be a living exploration of art and its meaning, beyond the sequestered timeline of the art history textbook. Over four classes we will discuss four different themes that have unified artists across the ages, and analyze paintings (as well as sculptures and drawing) from that light.
Week 1, May 12- Art as an Expression of Wonder: covering decorative art from the Romanesque, Gothic, and early Renaissance periods, to Vuillard and the symbolists, to the Pre-Raphaelites and the Art Nouveau era, and more
Week 2, May 19- Art as a Symbol of Order: covering classical art from the Greco-Roman world to Giotto and other masters of the Italian Renaissance, to Durer, Holbein, Ingres, and more
Week 3, May 26- Art as a Theatre of Emotion: covering dramatic art from the Hellenistic period and the descendants of Michelangelo, to the Venetian masters, Rembrandt, George Inness, and more
Week 4, June 2- Art as a Mode of Observation: covering perceptual art from Leonardo da Vinci, the Dutch Golden Age, Velasquez, Whistler, Degas, the Impressionists, and more
This class is for the professional artist, the art student, the art lover, and the educator alike. All participants will receive recordings of the classes for future reference, as well as hand-outs.
