What prompted the David? What inspired Botticelli’s Venus? How did the Duomo come into existence— and why? What stepping stones brought them from the decorative, spiritual abstraction of the late medieval period, to the dynamic portrayal of the human form in the High Renaissance?

In this eight week class, we trace the beginning germinations of the Renaissance, from the gilded Trecento artists of Siena to the revival of the human form through Donatello, Giotto and Masaccio, the flowering of grace in artists like Fra Angelico, Ghirlandaio, and Botticelli, and the pursuit of the embodied divine by artists like Leonardo and Michelangelo.

In the footsteps of these artists, journey with me as I travel through Florence, Siena, Padua, Assisi, Arezzo, and Rome-- and inquire of their churches, monuments, and frescoes the secrets of their makers.

Beyond an art history text, we will encounter the artwork and the artists on their terms, in their territory, and ponder the historical context, the philosophy, and the technical pursuits that charged the Renaissance into being.

Outline of Course:
